The Birth of CPDme
CPDme director and owner Andrew while on shift as a busy Paramedic listened as a stressed and anxious colleague shared their frustration about having their portfolio returned by the HCPC (Health & Care Professions Council) seven times. During a break over a cup of tea, Andrew inquired about the HCPC's feedback and what his colleague thought was wrong with the portfolio (which, humorously, was as heavy as a small child!). The colleague responded, "I do CPD all the time, but I just don't record everything I do. There's no proper way for me to document it, I don't know the correct format, and I simply don't have the time, so I just throw everything into a shoebox."
Identifying the Core Challenges: Formatting, Time, and Shoebox
Andrew keyed in on three crucial issues: Formatting, Time, and Shoebox. His mind raced with ideas, perfectly aligning with the thesis he was writing for his degree. He realized that his colleague’s experience was not unique; many professionals faced similar challenges when it came to recording and managing their Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The lack of a streamlined and organized method for documenting CPD activities often resulted in frustration, wasted time, and the risk of non-compliance with regulatory bodies like the HCPC. The conversation over a simple cup of tea sparked an idea in Andrew's mind that would soon lead to a transformative solution.
From Concept to Creation
Thus, the concept of CPD Made Easy was born. Andrew conducted research with professionals not only in medicine but also in fields like financial advising, chartered surveying, and other diverse professions. Ironically, they all shared the same concerns as his colleague—using either paper and pens or outdated online systems that often lost their CPD records.
From this, Andrew launched the CPDme project. He collaborated with his university to create a system that would support professionals by reducing the time needed to record CPD, addressing the challenge of proper formatting, and replacing the metaphorical shoebox with a digital one—organised, sortable, and capable of highlighting gaps in CPD. After all, physical shoeboxes tend to collect dust and become disorganised over time.
On November 9th, at 11 am, Andrew's research group began sharing the CPDme system beyond their control group, and it quickly went viral—before "going viral" was even a common phrase—thanks to MSN Messenger.
Since 2009, Andrew and the CPDme team have supported over 100,000 users, facilitating more than 3 million submissions. They've empowered professionals and students across a wide range of fields to manage their CPD effectively.
A Global Impact: Supporting Students and Professionals Worldwide
As a not-for-profit social venture, Andrew has ensured that every student worldwide can access CPDme, helping them understand the importance of recording and managing CPD. The goal is that, upon graduation, these students will stand out to employers and continue to uphold the practice of maintaining accurate CPD records, thereby supporting professional accountability and dependability, all under the ethos of "Development for Life."
Trusted by thousands globally, CPDme offers a mobile app and web dashboard designed to streamline the documentation of learning experiences. Users can easily upload supporting documents like certificates and reflect on their learning activities. Members have the option to generate a comprehensive portfolio, customising which elements to include in the printed or digital versions.
Expanding Services and Collaborations
CPDme's core service revolves around a website and mobile app that help users build, record, and maintain accurate Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records. The platform also collaborates with organisations in the UK, Europe, and worldwide to provide a corporate CPD solution tailored for teams in sectors such as Health and Social Care, Education, Law, Finance, and Business. The system aligns with various frameworks, including those from the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
Additionally, CPDme offers complete event management services, including registration, badging, certificate design, and digital delivery. The platform can also host learning management systems, as well as create custom training and learning software. This includes tracking mandatory training, issuing certificates, and setting up email reminders. Furthermore, CPDme can build payment systems, web pages, single sign-on capabilities, and other customised software solutions.
From an initial ideal twenty-five years ago CPDme is now a globally recognised company that prides itself at being the leader in its field, transforming the digital future of continuous professional development.
